When in Denmark...

This semester I'm spending in Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark. I'll be sampling the food, living with other Danish students, and trying to find my way around this beautiful city! I want to share my experiences with all of you through descriptions, thoughts, pictures, and video. I hope it keeps me somewhat connected to everyone at home and, in return, allows some of you to virtually visit Denmark, home of the oldest flag and the happiest people.

My Stomping Grounds

Thought I would take a break from the tour stuff and show you around my part of the city. DIS is right in the medieval center of the city, so it's right near all of the major sights. The Strøget is the pedestrian shopping street and the main street of the city--since its medieval beginnings. It's one block over from where I go to school. The buildings all have "basement"entrances, because when the buildings were originally built the doors were at street level, but the level of the city has risen due to accumulation of waste. Needless to say, this city's pretty old. But it's inspiring to go to school every day in such an amazing area.

Street near where I go to school and where we go for lunch often. Note the army of bikes parked on the corner.

Fun fact: The streets in the city all have rounded corners because of a bunch of fires that damaged the city in the 1700s. Buildings were required to be rounded at the corners so that the fire brigades could get through easier. It looks charming, but it had a really functional purpose.

My friend Seth in front of Sankt Petri Bagerie (St. Peter's Bakery). Note the pretzel sign--but I haven't been able to find pretzels yet!

My classes are also right near the City Hall building, which is a Copenhagen landmark. The City Hall is right across the street from the Tivoli Gardens, an amusement park that inspired Disney and opens in the spring.

City Hall building--or, in Danish, Radhus!

Me and Hans ... Christian Andersen, of course!

City Hall Square is used for a lot of things, including exhibitions and demonstrations.
